Selena
She was a performer, artist creator, performer and also challenged boundaries in the musical world. She was the first Mexican American singer who was traditional yet modern. She brought together both worlds and helped bring Tejano music into mainstream culture. Her tragic death cut a hole in her rising profile and as often happens when a bright deeply genial star dies far too young caused many to grieve all the untapped potential. Fans have worked harder throughout the years to ensure that her legacy is kept alive. Selena's tragic murder by a shooter triggered the outpouring of emotions within Latino communities that is comparable with the reaction to Elvis Presley's death and John Lennon's. Selena was a hugely well-known singer for Latinos across North America. But her songs touched the hearts of both young as well as the elderly. Selena was a sexy glamorous performer on stage and was often called her as the Latina Madonna. Off-stage Selena was a strong role model as she participated actively in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
